Moxibustion

Santa Rosa Acupuncturist 59 1

Increase the flow of vital energy

Moxibustion (Moxa) is a form of therapy in TCM in which we burn a preparation of dried mugwort (Artimesia Argyi) and position it a few inches above the skin over specific points or areas of the body. This serves to stimulate acupuncture points, increase circulation, and warm the blood in the vessels.

There are many types of Moxa and even more applications. Moxa is a valuable tool and an important part of my treatment plans.

Frequently Asked Questions

−
What is moxibustion used for?

Moxibustion is used to stimulate acupuncture points, increase circulation, and warm the blood and body, particularly for conditions linked to poor circulation or stagnation. It's a valuable addition to acupuncture treatment plans for pain, digestive issues, and fertility support.

+
Does moxibustion hurt?
Moxibustion doesn't typically hurt. The burning mugwort is held a few inches above the skin, producing a gentle, penetrating warmth rather than direct heat or pain. Most people find the sensation soothing and relaxing during treatment.
+
Is moxibustion safe?
Yes, moxibustion is safe when performed by a trained practitioner who controls the distance and duration of heat exposure. It's a well-established part of Traditional Chinese Medicine, used for thousands of years to support circulation and healing without harming the skin.
+
What conditions can moxibustion help with?
Moxibustion can help with pain, poor circulation, digestive weakness, and cold-related conditions, and it's also traditionally used to support fertility and turn breech babies late in pregnancy. It's often combined with acupuncture for enhanced therapeutic effect.
+
What is moxa made of?
Moxa is made from dried mugwort, specifically the species Artemisia argyi. The herb is processed into a fine, fluffy material that burns slowly and evenly, allowing practitioners to apply controlled, therapeutic warmth to acupuncture points or areas of the body.
