Pregnancy

Acupuncture treatments in pregnancy are very effective at minimizing or eliminating many pregnancy symptoms or complications. In early pregnancy, acupuncture can help with morning sickness, fatigue, headaches, constipation, bleeding, and aid in the prevention of miscarriage. During the second and third trimesters acupuncture can treat conditions such as low back pain, insomnia, heartburn, hemorrhoids, leg cramps, preeclampsia, premature labor, and breech babies. We also have a specialized sequence of treatments that will help prepare your body for labor and delivery.

Menstrual Disorders. PMS. Dysmenorrhea.

Women in many western societies have accepted the negative changes that accompany that “time” of the month as being “normal” which is in stark contrast to societies that embrace TCM. The symptoms of PMS are viewed, in Chinese Medicine, as signs that the woman’s body is out of balance. There are many protocols in TCM that not only address the signs and symptoms of PMS and painful periods but also uncover and treat the root cause. A woman’s journey through the menstrual cycle should be free of any emotional changes and physical discomfort.

Hormonal Imbalances. Menopause

Menopause is a natural, physiological cycle that occurs in all women. For some women, going through menopause can be a very difficult and even an emotionally painful time. Conventional medical treatments typically address the various signs and symptoms commonly associated with menopause. Often, these treatments include the use of hormones, which for some women pose an increased risk of cancer.

In TCM we recognize that although these changes in body chemistry are occurring the signs and symptoms of menopause are simply an indication that something is out of balance. Some of the symptoms include, hot flashes, night sweats, irritability, insomnia, joint aches and pain, and severe mood swings. There is no need to suffer through it alone. At Acupuncture Mama, we can provide the treatment and support to help you move into this new phase of life.

Stress. Anxiety. Insomnia

We live in a hectic world and many people often endure prolonged periods of stress. This keeps our bodies in a constant state of “fight or flight” essentially never allowing your sympathetic nervous system to turn off. This chronic state of stress can interfere with hormone and neurotransmitter levels leaving us more vulnerable to anxiety, depression, insomnia, and other related problems. Acupuncture stimulates the release of oxytocin which regulates the parasympathetic nervous system allowing your body to “rest and digest” and perform the maintenance that occurs when the body is at rest. Chinese Medicine can also be helpful for people who would like to transition off of Western pharmaceuticals to a more holistic approach. I have helped many patients find a more natural way to deal with insomnia, depression and anxiety.

Headaches. Migraines

TCM has an effective framework for the treatment of headaches and migraines. Acupuncture works by activating the parasympathetic nervous system to decrease overall stress and muscle tension. Another major component of treatment is nutritional and lifestyle adjustments. At Acupuncture Mama we integrate both acupuncture and Chinese herbal formulas with nutritional and lifestyle changes to address your pain and symptoms. We take a whole body approach and will design a treatment plan that will lessen the intensity and frequency of your headaches.

Pain

It is estimated that four out of five Americans will experience some form of back pain in their lifetime. There are many causes of pain including stress (whether physical or emotional), improper lifting, traumatic injury, sedentary lifestyle or over exercising. All of these things can lead to tight or strained muscles or ligaments that will throw the body out of balance.

In TCM terms, when your body is put under any kind of stress your Qi becomes stagnant. This stagnation can lead to pain and inflammation. Acupuncture helps to ease your pain because Acupuncture points are innervated by nerves and blood vessels. Inserting needles at the various points increases the circulation in your body and reduces inflammation. Acupuncture also helps to calm your nervous system which can be in fight or flight mode when you are in pain.

At Acupuncture Mama we will ask you many questions during our initial evaluation, some of them seemingly unrelated to your pain. This helps us arrive at a treatment plan that is comprehensive and specifically tailored to help you. Acupuncture treatments will not only help eliminate your pain but they have the added benefit of giving you more energy, better sleep, increased immunity and an overall improved quality of life.
