Does Acupuncture Treatment Work?
Acupuncture is an ancient method of healing from China dating back more than a thousand years. But does acupuncture treatment work? Millions of people have been helped over many centuries using these ancient Chinese methods of healing, so there must be something that keeps people coming back.
Understanding the theory of acupuncture
Typical examinations begin with non-invasive exams such as looking at the tongue and checking the pulse points. Very tiny needles are then applied at specific points dictated by the symptoms being treated based on the channels of energy that run through a person’s body. Acupuncture therapy is reported to unclog or unblock those passages and allow the body to put its natural healing ability to work.
Is there evidence that acupuncture is effective?
A study by Andrew Vickers, a biostatistician at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center, suggested some real possibilities as to how and why acupuncture works. His studies suggest that the tiny pricks of the acupuncturist may bring together the body’s immune system to fight that small injury, and that could lead it to help in other areas.
His study showed acupuncture to be helpful particularly in the areas of pain relief. Vickers also suggested that even if it is a placebo effect at times, if it reduces pain and the patient feels better, it has worked regardless of what it has been called.
Acupuncture has been used for multiple ailments across the ages.
Thinking beyond pain relief, people still ask, “Does acupuncture treatment work?” Acupuncture has been used for many different ailments from major to minor and has demonstrated positive results. Here are a few examples of additional acupuncture treatments:
