Acupuncture Points: Unlocking the Secrets to Neck Pain Relief
Acupuncture is an ancient Chinese technique. It involves inserting paper-thin needles into different points in the skin. This is done to restore the natural flow of energy in the body. There are several benefits of acupuncture. In various studies, acupuncture has been found to be both safe and effective.
Acupuncture can treat many disorders including disorders of the eye, gastrointestinal disorders, mental and emotional disorders, and neurological disorders. Have you ever wondered how acupuncturists locate different acupuncture points? To help answer this question, we take a look at some common acupuncture points and how they can be located by acupuncturists in Santa Rosa.
Gallbladder 20
Gallbladder 20 (or GB 20) is an important point to treat headaches and cold/flu symptoms. To locate the point, an acupuncturist must first open both palms and place them on the sides of the patient’s head.
Next, they must carefully slide their thumb down the back of the person’s head until they locate a depression on either side of the neck. This is the point where the skull meets the neck. Once the depression is located, the acupuncturist presses their thumbs into it for 30 seconds, making small circles.
Gallbladder 21
Acupuncture point Gallbladder 21 (or GB 21) is commonly used to treat neck stiffness, headache, shoulder tension, and stress. GB 21 is located on the shoulder, halfway between the rotator cuff and the vertebral column.
Locating GB 21 is easier than other points. To locate GB 21, a trained acupuncturist uses the hand opposite to the (patient’s) affected side. The acupuncturist grabs as much muscle as they can between their thumb and index finger.
The professional gently and swiftly squeezes and releases the muscle, working from the base of the neck to the shoulder. An area that is sorer than the others is the trigger point. Once the trigger point is located, the acupuncturist digs hard with their thumb and rubs continuously to release tension.
Small Intestine 3
Small Intestine 3 (or SI 3) is used for neck pain, wrist pain, upper back pain, and shoulder pain. To locate this point, an acupuncturist first makes a loose fist. Next, the practitioner brings their palm inwards towards the patient’s chest. The loose fist should now rest in the middle of the patient’s chest. The acupuncturist’s thumb should point towards the patient’s chin.
Next, the practitioner uses the index finger of their opposite hand to locate the point past the pinky or fifth knuckle. A fold of skin pops out. The acupuncturist digs into this fold with their index finger. This is done to locate a slight depression between the bones. The practitioner makes small circles with their index finger in this depression to relieve soreness.
